Public Hearing on Little Rock Mine Expansion – Sept 2; 5:30 pm
The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division will hold a public hearing on Freeport-McMoRan Tyrone Operation’s application for a permit to expand the Little Rock mine and update the closeout plan.
The Little Rock Mine is located to the west of the Tyrone mine. Freeport is proposing to expand the existing Little Rock Mine Permit Boundary by approximately 68 acres to account for the projected expansion of the open pit and associated disturbance areas outside the current permit boundary limits. At closure, a pit lake is expected to begin to form within the Little Rock Mine open pit due to the cessation of dewatering activities.
GRIP is concerned about future water quality in the pit lake, the use of an unapproved cover material in reclamation activities, and the potential for impacts to groundwater.
