NEW Chino 9 Waste Rock Stockpile Proposal

Thursday, February 21, 2019

Bayard Community Center – Time TBA

Freeport-McMoRan Chino Mines, NM Mining and Minerals Division (MMD), and New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) will hold a public meeting on Chino Mine’s application to construct a new 9 Waste Rock Stockpile (9WRS).  Chino proposes to expand the design limit of the mine by 248 acres to the south and northeast of the existing Reservoir 9. The 9WRS will be constructed on top of the existing Reservoir 9 and will hold 76 million tons of mine waste rock. The application describes how the waste rock stockpile will be constructed and reclaimed. The stockpile is expected to reach 7000 feet elevation.

This public meeting will include presentations by Freeport, MMD and NMED. Posters will be set up and Freeport and agency staff will be available to answer questions.
