Silver City Watershed Keepers to host Rainwater Harvesting Project Bike Tour
The Silver City Watershed Keepers in partnership with Stream Dynamics and The Bikeworks will host a bike tour of rainwater harvesting projects in Silver City on Saturday, July 24th from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.
“Pedal with us on this gentle bicycle tour of the many rainwater harvesting projects in our community. Experience the fun of an early morning ride through neighborhoods that are part of the Silver City Watershed and see how watershed stewards have conserved water by redirecting storm water to benefit gardens, orchards, parks while also protecting San Vicente Creek water quality,” said Silver City Watershed Keepers Coordinator Leigh Jenkins. A project of GRIP, the Silver City Watershed Keepers engages community members in stewardship of our water resources, education, and restoration of the Silver City watershed.
Join us at The Bikeworks’ new location at 914 North Pope Street at 9:00 am. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bike, helmet, water and snacks. Those wishing to borrow a bicycle may do so for a small donation to The Bikeworks. The tour will begin at 9:15 am and will visit several of the projects completed by Stream Dynamics over the past decade. Once the tour is completed, participants will gather at The Bikeworks for a light lunch and slideshow featuring other rainwater-harvesting projects not included on the tour. Bring $10 for a sandwich or bring your own brown bag lunch.
“Rainwater harvesting is the diversion or capture of storm water runoff that occurs during heavy summer monsoon rains and other rainstorm events throughout the year. Redirecting storm water from impermeable surfaces like roadways to permeable surfaces allows the water to lose energy, lowers the water temperature, and allows the water to gradually seep back into the water table,” explains Van Clothier whose company Stream Dynamics provides a full range of water harvesting, stream restoration, and erosion control services for homes, businesses, municipalities, and wildlands. Over 80 rainwater harvesting projects have been completed by Stream Dynamics
in the Silver City area.
The Bikeworks is a community-supported nonprofit that promotes creative and active lifestyles, self-reliance and sustainability. The all-inclusive shop is a place where you can find a quality bike to buy, parts and accessories to outfit your bike, have your bike repaired by experienced & certified mechanics, and even fix your bike yourself using do-it-yourself tool stations.
