{"id":1546,"date":"2017-08-25T14:16:30","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T14:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gilaresources.info\/wp\/?p=1546"},"modified":"2018-12-16T22:54:16","modified_gmt":"2018-12-16T22:54:16","slug":"grip-challenges-martinez-administration-water-quality-rollbacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gilaresources.info\/wp\/blog\/grip-challenges-martinez-administration-water-quality-rollbacks\/","title":{"rendered":"GRIP challenges Martinez Administration water quality rollbacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Martinez Administration wants to weaken water quality rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>GRIP, Amigos Bravos, &amp; NMELC challenge harmful rollbacks<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The New Mexico Environment Department has proposed amendments to the state&#8217;s water quality regulations that will weaken protections for our surface and groundwater.<\/p>\n<p>GRIP and Amigos Bravos, represented by the NM Environmental Law Center, have challenged these proposed changes, submitting our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.nm.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Statement-of-Position-on-the-New-Mexico-Environment-Departments-Petition-to-Amend-2.pdf\">Statement of Position<\/a> on NMED&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.nm.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/The-New-Mexico-Environment-Departments-Petition-to-Amend-the-Ground-and-Surface-Water-Protection-Regulations-20.6.2-NMAC-and-Request-for-Hearing-1.pdf\">Petition to Amend<\/a> the rules.<\/p>\n<p>As a parting gift to industry polluters, the Martinez Administration wants to make the following revisions to state water quality rules which GRIP and its partners oppose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create discharge permit &#8220;amendments&#8221; to allow changes in requirements for monitoring, reporting, sampling and analysis, closure plan, containment system(s), pollution control unit(s) and sewerage system(s) requirements without public notice.<\/li>\n<li>Leave off the list of toxic pollutants in NMAC 20.6.2 harmful pollutants regulated by EPA and California.<\/li>\n<li>Enact standards that could expose ten times as many people to cancer risk than EPA and states that are more serious about water protection and public health.<\/li>\n<li>Allow lifetime variances from water quality regulations that would allow industry to pollute for the life of a facility rather than provide an incentive to reduce contamination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NMED&#8217;s petition goes before the New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission on November 14.
