Earth Day is an annual global event celebrated on April 22 to raise awareness and support for environmental protection and long-term sustainability. This year’s theme “Planet vs. Plastics”, unites students, parents, businesses, governments, churches, unions, individuals, and nongovernmental organizations in an unwavering commitment to call for the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics. Participants will be able to learn about these issues and participate in related projects at this year’s celebration.
In order to do our part to reduce our use of single use plastics, this year’s Gila Earth Day will be a “zero waste” event. Please bring your refillable, reusable water bottles to Gila Earth Day as no plastic bottles of water will be for sale. We will have water coolers available at the Gila Earth Day table to refill your bottles.
Additionally, through the generosity of our Gila Earth Day/Trail Days sponsors, we will be providing compostable and recycled tableware for the Pancake Breakfast and other food vendors. The Upper Gila Watershed Alliance’s New Earth Project will be collecting all the food waste and compostable tableware at the event and in turn composting these materials in their bioreactors, providing nutrient and microbial-rich compost for use in gardens and plantings. Thanks to UGWA for demonstrating how we can turn these waste materials into valuable compost!
