The NM Mining and Minerals Division held a public hearing on the Emma and Tyrone Peak exploration projects on February 10. The public comment period remains open until Monday, February 24.
The Emma Exploration at the Tyrone Mine would disturb 60 acres located adjacent to residences. Freeport has not disclosed in its application the full range of potential impacts to its neighbors, such as noise and light pollution. Additionally, the company has said that it will not reclaim the disturbance because it intends to mine this area. However, It could take months or years after exploration is complete before mining begins at the Emma Expansion Project. In the meantime, if the exploration
disturbance is not reclaimed, natural resource damage can occur from stormwater runoff and erosion. This is contrary to Mining Act requirements.
