Project Background
Thanks to a partnership between the New Mexico Environment Department, the Town of Silver City, and community partners, the San Vicente Creek River Stewardship Project is helping to heal this vital riparian area. This work protects San Vicente Creek and its tributaries—Silva Creek and Pinos Altos Creek— for generations to come!
Project Highlights
Restoring Habitat
- Removed 300+ tons of non-native, invasive trees from 55 acres to reduce riparian fire risk
- Planted 800 native trees and shrubs to enhance wildlife habitat
Protecting the Creek
- Planted 1,000+ willows and cottonwoods to stabilize streambanks and induce meandering
- Installed 3 grade control structures to restore natural stream flow
Improving Water Quality
- Protected the Town’s main sewer line from erosion
- Built 75 water harvesting features to slow stormwater, reduce erosion, prevent sediment from entering creeks, and recharge groundwater
